Biodiversity Monitoring

Species monitoring is required to assess deviations from predicted project impacts and the effectiveness of the mitigation measures proposed. BIOTA carries out monitoring programs for various species or groups of species (terrestrial, freshwater, or marine) using diverse techniques adapted to the specific needs of each species and project, following national and international guidelines.

Biological Communities Monitoring in Tâmega Hydropower System

Location: North region (Boticas, Cabeceiras de Basto, Chaves, Ribeira de Pena and Vila Pouca de Aguiar municipalities)

Components: Flora and habitats, bats; mammals, ichthyofauna and freshwater mussels.

Description of the project: Development of Monitoring Programmes concerning the hydropower scheme of Gouvães, Alto Tâmega and Daivões and associated elements/infrastructures. Concerning the Minimization and Compensatory Measures, BIOTA coordinates the translocation of freshwater mussels and participates in the implementation of these measures for fish communities.

Marine Biodiversity Monitoring Survey - Coral South FLNG Project

Biodiversity Monitoring and Evaluation Program and Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) for the Hawksbill turtle for the Biodiversity Management Plan of the Coral South FLNG

Description of the project: Development of a Biodiversity Action Plan for the Hawksbill turtle to deliver a Net Gain for hawksbill turtles under the Coral South Floating Liquefied Natural Gas Project. The plan has been produced to identify priorities for hawksbill turtle conservation and provide an implementation, monitoring and evaluation approach for the delivery of a Net Gain for this species.

Iberian Wolf Monitoring within the LMAT project of the Mogadouro I and II Photovoltaic Power Plants

Location: Northern Region (municipalities of Mogadouro, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, and Miranda do Douro)

Description of the project: Implementation of Year 0 monitoring of the Iberian wolf, through prospecting transects for signs of presence (e.g. scats, tracks), acoustic and visual detection points, and camera trapping.
